It's mid-June, which means the thistle season has begun. At Kwekerij Kroon in Abbenes, they are fully engaged in cultivating the most beautiful thistles. This family business has been around since 1878 and has perfected the art of cultivation over generations. Martien Kroon, who has led the nursery for 26 years, enjoys working with nature every day.
From seed to full bloom thistle
The process begins in the greenhouse, where self-harvested seeds or purchased tissue culture are placed on plugs. After that, the plants are moved outdoors, where they take root firmly in the soil. It takes at least two years for a thistle to go from seed to full bloom, with the first flowers being harvested after one year. A thistle plant can produce flowers for up to eight years.
Harvesting and processing
When the thistles are in full bloom, the Kwekerij Kroon team cuts the flowers and ensures they are placed in water in the shed within half an hour. This quick flower delivery contributes to the high quality of the thistles. The thistles are then sorted by size and flower heads. A machine bundles the thistles, after which they are placed in crates, ready for delivery to the customer. Whether it's bulk flowers or exclusive flowers, Kwekerij Kroon delivers quality.
Varieties and storage
Kwekerij Kroon cultivates three types of thistles: Love White Green, Donard, and Eryngium Donard. Each type has its own ideal storage temperature. Some thistles prefer warmth, while others thrive better in cold conditions. This careful storage is essential for maintaining the quality of the thistles, making them a favorite among wholesale flower suppliers and florists.
To grow approximately one million stems annually, Kwekerij Kroon works with a team of 30 to 35 people. This team ensures that the most beautiful thistles are produced every day. When the peak season ends, the team adjusts to meet seasonal needs.
